Safe Patient Handling Programs: Are They Needed?
The American Nursing Association has taken a path to redesign federal and state policies regarding safe patient handling procedures. The campaign promoting safe patient handling and prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders to the nursing workforce is here. The Healthcare Industry can no longer accept individual nurses being responsible for lifting patients in excess of one hundred pounds. The data tells us now is the time for change. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the following ranking for back sprains and strains in the workplace:
#1 – Nurses Aides and Attendants
#2 – Truck Drivers
#6 – Registered Nurses
#8 – Construction Workers
Additional research among nurses has shown:
52% of nurses complain about chronic back pain
12% of nurses consider leaving nursing because of back pain
38% suffer from occupational-related back pain requiring lost work days
